Northern Tajikistan in the last centuries of BC and in the first centuries of AD.@Probably, it was not united historic-geographical region. Its southwestern part, which was the nucleus of independent region - Ustrushany in the epoch of early-Middle Ages, apparently, during this period (as in the difficult years of fight against the Greco-Macedonian conquerors, clarified by information of the antique authors) entered in the composition of Sogd. The northern and northeastern regions, which geographically compose the western part of the Valley Fergana, and in historical cultural sense, according to archaeological data, more greatly gravitated towards to Fergana, and, possibly, they were connected with it politically. We do not have the reliable data about this, but the assumptions about the entry of northern Tajikistan (together with Khorezm and Chach) into the composition of Kushan reign did not thus far obtain confirmation in the reliable facts.
In the course of the archaeological studies in northern Tajikistan, which are led for thirty years under the management of N. N. Negmatov, was opened a whole series of the monuments of the 1C BC - 1C AD (or the layers of this time on multi-layer of fortification). The obtained results already make it possible to outline the overall historical cultural outlines of this period in northern Tajikistan, although the researchers do not have an answer about many concrete questions for the moment. It makes difficult to comprehend and precisely date the archaeological monuments from end of 1st millennium BC to began 1st millennium AD in many respects that the monuments and the layers of this time for the moment are insufficiently studied in the adjacent regions - in Sogd of Samarkand and in Fergana.
One of the ancient municipal of Central Asia was Khujand, where are now discovered the layers of the last century of BC (see below). From end of first millennium BC - to beginning of first millennium AD, life continued, also, in the territory of Nurtepa fortification (see above). The layers of this time exist on the fortification of Shirin, next to which, near the settlement Kurkat, since 1974 by A. K. Mirbabaev@ancient cemetery with the burials in the cave cameras is investigated. The layers of the last century of BC were opened in the course of the long-standing works of excavation, conducted by STAKE (first by E. D. Saltovskoi, and in recent years by N. T. Rakhimov) in Yra-Tybe, on fortification Mugtepa (6 ha in area). Although the dimensions of territory, the nature of building and the fortification of the earliest stage of becoming accustomed to this complex multi-layer monument had been left not be explained (it is investigated the section of fortress wall with the peepholes, dated by the first century AD). The image of winged griffin and two small idols, exposed in presses, are from the early layer of Mugtepa. Treasure of Roman Denariyev 1C - 2C, obtained near the settlement Mujum (region of Ganchin), is thus far the only finding, which testifies about the penetration in northern Tajikistan in the antiquity of foreign coin. The important and thus far also badly investigated source on the history of culture in northern Tajikistan is stone figures (petrography) which relate to first half of 1st millennium or to the epoch of early-Middle Ages, and dating and interpretation them frequently causes difficulties.
